What is it about?
Supercomputer or the High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster is used to support research work at Skoltech for all numerical experiments and Big Data investigations. It is also used to teach students how to program a big parallel computer and how to analyze results of the computations. The machine is named after the Noble prize laureate Zhores Alferov. The article describes how the Zhores cluster is working and analyzes some applications on this machine.

Why is it important?
The article sets a standard for the architectural design, evaluation and commissioning of such machine. This may help institutions who want to purchase and setup a similar instrument for their scientific work. Properly designed HPC cluster may be used to support internal research or external grants work, which makes it indispensable for any significant R&D or teaching activity.
Perspectives
Summarizing the architectural ideas and commissioning results in an article marks a milestone for new computational capabilities of the University, such as Skoltech. All scientific work at Skoltech that relies on this instrument will refer to the article when explaining the results of their work. Therefore, writing and publishing such article was very important for my personal contribution to the R&D work at SKoltech.
