What is it about?

The article studies the relations between biomass of reserved grasslands and climate variables, such as precipitation, temperature of soil and air, relative humidity. For the correlation analysis, the biggest from the existing Ukrainian databases was used, this database span the period of 1949-2016 yrs of Aboveground Net Primary Production observations. . The correlation of bioclimatic variables (month precipitation, relative humidity and air and soil temperatures) and above-ground net primary production (ANPP) were investigated for three study plots that represent major steppe microrelief: plain, slope and lowland. The results of multiple regression analysis showed the major components that influenced the ANPP at each of the study plots ‘Plain’, ‘Slope’ and ‘Lowland’. The precipitation and relative humidity in the months before the vegetation peak were most important for ANPP accumulation.

Why is it important?

Results of this study are important for the prediction of ecosystem changes under the climate changes and also for the development of nature conservation programmes.

Perspectives

The publication is the part of complex statistic analysis of the dependence of grassland Aboveground Net Primary Production from climate variables, forced by global climate changes. The next steps of the analysis are more complex methods, such as regression analysis or principal component analysis, to investigate other relations and/or confirm received results. The investigated relations between parameters help us deeply understand the long-term influence of clime changes on the grassland ecosystems ( the most vulnarable Ukrainian ecosystems, highly influenced by agronomy).

We intend to continue our research of Climate Change impact on productivity of natural ecosystems. I suppose that role of species diversity in maintaining grasslands productivity under the pressure of climatic factors is not investigated sufficiently. I hope the publication of the article will help to find new collaborators for this study.
