What is it about?
What are the legal implications if a Member State of the European Union (EU) should decide to leave the EU? The article gives an answer to the requirements to be met in order to leave the EU. It further elaborates on standardized future scenarios by looking at existing relations of the EU with other countries. Thereby, it tries to anticipate the legal consequences of an exit in different legal areas as accurately as possible at this point in time.

Why is it important?
By following the political developments one could find out which of the standardized scenarios for the future relationship with a former Member State turns out to be the most likely one. After that, the article should allow an as accurate as possible anticipation of the legal consequences of an exit from the EU in certain areas of law. These standardized scenarios could e.g. be used in order to amend existing contracts that are affected by an exit from the EU, even though the framework of the future relationship of a former Member State with the EU is still unclear.
