What is it about?
Laboratory (microbiological) studies indicated that the products resulted from burdock (Arctium lappa L.) leaves, for example watery or alcoholic extracts, may have unpredictable effects (stimulatory or inhibitory) upon usual antibiotics (eg., Ampicillin, Gentamicin, Tetracycline, Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim, Ciprofloxacin or Chloramphenicol). The most important effects were observed on Tetracycline, Ampicillin and Chloramphenicol, and they were of stimulatory type.

Why is it important?
These observation may be useful for physicians and pharmacists which are currently recommending phytomedicines based on burdock leaf extracts.
Perspectives
The extracts from burdock leaves also may be useful for developing new, natural synergistic agents able to counteract microbial resistance to current antibiotics.
