What is it about?

The chitinases, CHIT1 and YKL-40, derived from macrophage enzymes play roles in defense against chitin-containing pathogens; they have been demonstrated to be biomarkers in lysosomal storage disorders; but the use will be extended in a wide number of diseases, as sarcoidosis, fever of unknown origin, any inflammatory disease with macrophage activation. This review explores the wide spectrum of present and future discoveries of the chitinases in immune-mediated diseases.
