Why is it important?
With the numerous new findings coming from gene-sequencing studies as well as ongoing exploration for red algae in remote parts of the world, our understanding of the classification of the red algae (marine and freshwater) has undergone dramatic changes at the generic level and higher. There is continued pressure to keep up with these advances, and this series of updates on how that pertinent literature impacts on classification of the red algae is relevant to all those who study the red algae.
