What is it about?

An increasing number of medical devices help to improve patients‘ care and therapy. However, a network of devices and systems could even be more beneficial and could decrease error-proneness e.g. when operating various different user interfaces: touchscreen operation, hard buttons, switches, monochrome and color displays etc.

Why is it important?

We aim to give manufacturers of medical devices and systems a motivation for collaborating. This is the first step for interoperability and thus for a networked operation room and the „hospital 4.0“.

Perspectives

I hope that this article will contribute to a better visibility of the IEEE Standard that we have already developed. This standard is the basis for interoperability between medical devices and systems...! However, now a „critical mass“ is needed to establish the developed libraries and protocols. This is important for us clinicians but also for the sake of our patients!
