What is it about?

Tissue culture is considered to be one of the method for large scale propagation of important plants for commercial cultivation. However, one of the concern that often arises is whether the plants propagated through tissue culture are genetically similar or not?. Using a long term study, we have analyzed the performance of tissue culture plants with the seedling and also examined the level of genetic variation among the tissue culture plants using molecular based markers.

Perspectives

The paper is based on more than 10 years of study starting from the initiation of tissue culture to field planting and comparative yield analysis. This is the first report of large scale field evaluation of tissue culture plants anywhere in the world. This paper also conclusively demonstrated the genetic uniformity of tissue culture derived plants . This will be a good read for both industries working on tissue culture as well as scientists working on molecular markers.
