What is it about?

On two visits to Italy in 1494-5 and 1505-7 the artist Albrecht Dürer learnt the Renaissance Venetian language and uses vocabulary derived from it in his German writings, particularly to express new concepts and ideas in his innovatory discussions of the theory and practice of art.

Why is it important?

This is the first comprehensive study of Dürer's knowledge and use of the Venetian Italian language. It sheds wholly new light on the extent and nature of his first-hand encounters with Italian artists. It greatly enhances knowledge of Dürer's role in bringing Renaissance concepts of art from Italy to Germany and Northern Europe.

Perspectives

The publication, following on my two-volume book Albrecht Dürer : Documentary Biography (Yale UP, 2017) combines the methods of art history and linguistic analysis in a way not previously attempted in the centuries-old academic study of Dürer, Germany's greatest painter.
