What is it about?

The introduction of autonomous driving faces the following dilemma, either autonomously driven cars comply with all regulatons to the letter and therefore become a hindrance in the traffic flow or they follow optimized trajectories resulting in a kind of traffic behavior which human drivers do not understand or misinterpret. At least until the time when practically all cars are autonomous cars, neither efficiency nor safety might be improved. It might even happen that during that time the potential of autonomous cars might induce novel kinds of misuse of this technology.

Why is it important?

The challenging goal of a fully automated individual road traffic can only be achieved over a long period of time where cars with highly different technological equipment participate in traffic. The introduction of automated cars increases the technological diversity in road traffic and therefore increases the complexity to be managed.

Perspectives

An introduction of automated cars in specific situations and for specific purposes can produce the desireable effects if the specific necessary infrastructure is provided. Examples for such such situations are public transport or long distance hauling.
