Research examines essential changes in the residential structures during the Soviet period Riga, and explores how these structures are represented and visually modified under military dictatorship.

Why is it important?

Research findings show that cinema allows to explain a city in a way that traditional natural and social sciences are not capable of. Moreover, this research detect spatial history of Soviet Riga that would otherwise remain hidden.

Perspectives

I hope this article helps to better understand perception of residential space during the Soviet period. Besides, findings shed light on occurring urban processes in Soviet period Riga that were prohibited of visual representation by rigid censorship.
