What is it about?

A paribhāṣā is a conceptual device largely employed within Indian literature in Sanskrit: its scope corresponds largely to such concepts as interpretative rule, metarule, hermeneutic rule. An overview of the main uses of the term within their respective contexts is offered to the reader.

Why is it important?

An analysis of the very different uses of the technical terms paribhāṣā is useful in order to understand the "unity within diversity" model underlying Indian literature in Sanskrit, and in order to trace the history of this idea within Indian philosophical thought.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. The foundation of a research group about the theme of the paribhāṣā is one of the main results of this paper.
