What is it about?

This article explores how the medieval Zen Buddhist Dōgen conceived of his own teaching and practice, and compares this to modern notions of "religion". It shows that there are remarkable similarities, but also important differences.

Why is it important?

Research for the article is based on a systematic exploration of key terms and their semantic relations with other words in a clearly defined text corpus. This is the first time this method was used on the subject in question. This methodological approach takes the discussion beyond the level of hermeneutics of selective key passages that has dominated the literature.

Perspectives

This is also an experiment in joining methods from the digital humanities with traditional hermeneutics.
