Tsubouchi Shōyō (1859– 1935) gives an example of one of the earliest public discussions about the theatrical form called dance (buyō) based on Western scientific approaches in Japan.

Why is it important?

Tsubouchi Shōyō is most known for his theories of modern literature (shosetsu shinzui) as well as for his translations of the complete dramas of Shakespeare, but not so much as a pioneer in the theatrical reform movement of early Meiji-period.
