Why is it important?
Early modern times was the period when political organisation in Europe transitioned from the feudal order of the Middle Ages to the liberal constitutions of the nation states in the 19th C. How Switzerland handled this transition is unique in world history, and a story worth telling. Additionally, especially in the US, in the context of the 2nd Amendment discussion, there is much nonsense that is spread regarding the history of the right to bear arms and a well-ordered militia. This article provides solid historical background to the discussion.
