What is it about?

The collection of articles of association of these "armed societies" of Bologna is unique not just in Italy, for the late middle ages generally. I argue that they can be explained by an event peculiar to Bolognese history, that is the liberation of all slaves and the need to integrate them into the social and political organisation of the city.

Why is it important?

The "armed societies" in Bologna were a valiant effort to preserve Bologna's republican constitution. Eventually, the effort failed, and I try to show why that happened. I maintain that any history on the failure of republican institutions is valuable for us today.

Perspectives

Even though the article deals with events that happened 700-800 years, it is interesting to see how a politically engaged middle class sought to solve current social and political issues.
