Parasites of garfish from the Baltic Sea

What is it about?

We summarized existing data and added our own findings of metazoan parasites found from common garfish, B. belone, in the western Baltic Sea. We used molecular anaysis to identify nematodes. Nine parasite species were found, and six new locality records could be established.

Why is it important?

For the first time, the marine ectoparasite A. belones was recorded from the gills of garfish inside the Baltic Sea, indicating its ability to survive the spawning migration as well as the brackish water conditions at its reproduction grounds.
