What is it about?

The presence of some structures such as rounded lepidonts in scales of the genus Aphanius is a primary state in their scales or is the result of convergent evolution. Also, the polygonal state in the scales of Aphanius species is a primitive shared character state.

Why is it important?

Fish scales contain genetic data, so that they can help to understand phylogenetic relations in several groups of fishes.

Perspectives

I hope this article provide a sufficient data on phylogenetic significance of the scales in this groups of fish.
