What is it about?
A detailed review of Monika Wegmann's book on dialectometrical methods of illustrating the differrences between English dialects on maps in colour. Dialectometry is a statistically and mathematically based branch of dialectology developed by Hans Goebl at Salzburg University for grasping a large amount of dialectal differences at a time, thus contributing to a more objective picture of proximity and distance between dialects.

Why is it important?
My review tries to explain, and to do justice to, the complex theory and method of dialectometry as initiated by Prof. Hans Goebl of Salzburg University, as well as less ambitious methods of mapping dialectal differences and similarities.
Perspectives
Monika Wegmann's book, based on a dissertation accepted at the University of Zurich, is a very competent critical description of Hans Goebl's complex theory of dialectometry (started in the 1970s). Given the marginal state of dialectometry in the past, Wegmann's book and my extended review of it deserve dialectologists' undivided attention.
