What is it about?

This article addresses the role of the French State in the tourism economy of the country. It focuses on how in France, with a dirigiste (or directing) government, the state plays a more drect and active role in the tourism industry than is the case in other Western countries, such as the United States.

Why is it important?

Tourism is one of the largest single economic activities in the world, having recovered in large part from its losses during the worst of the covid pandemic. Countries around the world vie for tourist income and France, with notable attractions, both in Paris and the countryside, is a major participant in this market.

Perspectives

I have spent much time doing historical research in France, especially in Paris, and because the city is relatively small in area for its population, it is eminently walkable. The role of the flâneur, or walker gazing at the sites is well-known, and I have spent considerable time in this role.
