Hope is an important emotion in Leibniz's moral psychology and the paper shows why this is so. It also gives a general overview of Leibniz's theory of emotions and its connections to his perfectionist ethics.

Why is it important?
The role of emotions is not properly acknowledged in Leibniz's theory of mind. The paper argues that Leibniz gave an interesting account of emotions in the second book of his New Essays on Human Understanding and that emotions should be recognized as an important part of his theory of perfectibility.
Perspectives
The paper is one of the key articles written during a postdoc-project on G. W. Leibniz theory of emotions and self-perfection of man. It was published in a collection of articles Emotional Minds, edited by Sabrina Ebbersmeyer (De Gruyter, Berlin, 2012).
