What is it about?

This chapter explores discourse on social networking sites (henceforth SNSs) and the important role played by the expression of evaluation in this genre. Evaluation is used as "the broad cover term for the expression of the speaker or writer's attitude or stance towards, viewpoint on, or feelings about the entities or propositions that he or she is talking about" (Thompson and Hunston 2000: 5).

Analysis shows a pervasive use of appraisal resources by FB users, _including meanings of affect, judgement and appreciation_, in order to claim common ground

Perspectives

FB distinctive features seem to be responsible for the pervasive use of appraisal resources (affect, judgement and appreciation) as they stimulate the production of appraisal and positive politeness for doing relational work.
