What is it about?

We describe some general characteristics of youth languages and street slang and discuss the differences and commonalities of African and European youth languages and street slang. I also discusses the social and historical factors that lead to youth languages and street slang.

Why is it important?

Interestingly, in Europe street slang is mainly used for emphasising an ethnic identity somewhat rebelling against mainstream society which is perceived of as discriminating. In Africa, ethnicity does not play such a prominent role in street slang
