What is it about?

The study investigated how foreign language learners' motivation changes in 12-week university courses and the factors influenced the changes. The motivational alteration has some relationship with the learners' cultural backgrounds, and how they view different aspects of teachers.

Why is it important?

The study revealed that there is not a consistency in the factor that affects second language learners' motivation, but the motivation is affected by how the learners perceive the environmental and educational contextual factors, and also the perception is influenced by the learners' cultural backgrounds. This provides teachers and researchers with imortant pedagogical implications in terms of motivating second language learners.

Perspectives

It is important to note that second language learners' motivation is extremely complex and under strong influence form how each learner perceives every environmental and contextual factor which could vary in every minute and occasion. Therefore, a single, one-directional approach towards accounting for the role of motivation in learning a second language should be avoided and a careful consideration is required to design and interpreting the learners' behaviours in the language program.
