What is it about?

Temperature is one of the most fundamental measurements to ensure the quality and efficiency of industrial process plants.  Through physics models, simulations and industrial use cases we show that for the vast majority of industrial processes one can use the surface temperature of the piping as an accurate and reliable measure of the true temperature of the process. This result can have a significant impact on simplifying the engineering and use of temperature sensor in current and future industrial plants

Why is it important?

This work lays the foundation to challenge the traditional thinking and approaches to temperature measurement in the process industry. We show that the physics dictates that for the vast majority of industrial applications, one does not need to penetrate the piping to get a reliable temperature measurement

Perspectives

This work is essential for engineers who want a simpler and safer means of measuring temperature in their plants. No holes, no risk of failure and with the rules identified in this paper... virtually no engineering
