What is it about?
An alternative ADC concept based on sound localization. Evolution has found many solutions for locating predators, prey, food etc and these methods are essential to life as we know it. "Localizing" a Digital signal based on the analog amplitude bases on this concept. Since it uses spikes for data processing, it is more robust than pure analog processing of the input signals.

Why is it important?
The technologies are rapidly moving to smaller transistor sizes. While digital design rapidly adapts to these technologies, analog design is not moving at the same pace. The process, manufacturing deviations, voltage scaling etc are creating more problems for analog designs. With the increased use of sensors in various consumer products and with the focus on Industry 4.0, the role of a sensor signal processing unit becomes more important. The use of robust techniques based on peripheral neural structures and concepts makes this work unique and acts as a stepping stone for future of mixed signal designs.
