What is it about?

We propose new data that can help pinpoint causality using so-called instrumental variables in studies of the link between income per capita and the onset of armed civil conflict with a global sample of countries. We find that the importance of income per capita for explaining conflict onset is even greater than that found in conventional estimations.

Why is it important?

Isolating causal effects is important for understanding why some countries witness violent conflict while others do not.

Perspectives

We use novel historical data based on archival research and own estimates to find exciting new instruments for income per capita in the context of conflict studies.
