What is it about?

This paper argues that the Spartan citizen body decreased over about a hundred years due to small losses in conflicts. Those small losses then added up to cause insurmountable deficits.

Why is it important?

Previous arguments relied on principally economic or social causes of this decline. Warfare is more or less skipped over because there are few direct sources that address this issue. By applying statistical methods, we are able to estimate what the impact warfare had on the citizen body.
