Why is it important?
In coming decades, the computing systems would like to be more faster and faster, so the electronic devices would likely to be replaced by optical devices. Thus in any fast computing devices, half-adder is an essential component and this design has been implemented using photonic crystal, therefore it makes the device more compact as compared to other devices.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. This article also lead to photonic crystal research groups contacting me and ultimately to a greater involvement in the research.
