Why is it important?

The paper adds light to studies in the field of Applied Linguistics concerned with the global spread of English and speakers' attitudes and ideologies towards it.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great opportunity to further reflect about my own practice as an English as an Additional language professor and applied linguist. As it has been included in the references of the courses I teach to graduate and undergraduate students at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it has also contributed to enhance students' awareness about ELF as well as the social consequences concerning the global spread of English.
