What is it about?

The teaching of French in Malaysian schools was carried out informally in a few privileged boarding schools in the mid-1970s and was formally implemented in these schools in the 1980s. More than 30 years later, it has become part of the linguistic scenery in these residential schools as well as in some normal day schools. This article reviews the teaching and planning of French in Malaysian public schools from the 1970s to 2014.

Why is it important?

Apart from a related article written in French by the same authors, the learning and teaching of French in Malaysian schools has not been recorded much. This publication will enlighten future teachers of French as well as foreign language planners in Malaysia on the beginnings of and the purpose for foreign language teaching in Malaysian schools.

This article may interest potential post-graduate students who seek to know when, where, how and why foreign language (French, Arab, Japanese, German, etc.) teaching was implemented in Malaysian public schools.
