What is it about?

We mixed cellulose (pulp) and lignin in an ionic liquid and extruded filaments using the dry jet wet spinning methods. The filaments were subsequently treated thermally into carbon fibres.

Why is it important?

We managed to produce filaments with textile-like properties even with as much as 70 % of lignin, which is desirable in carbon fibre manufacturing due to the low cost and high carbon content of lignin.
