What is it about?

The book that I reviewed discusses the development of academic English from the 18th century to the present. The authors focus on features that distinguish spoken English from academic English on the one hand and between different types of academic English on the other. They particularly discuss the behaviour of frequent types of expressions that can be identified with the help of computing.

Why is it important?

This book is important for at least two reasons. One is that it gives valuable information to people who would like to develop the teaching and writing of academic English. The other is that it discusses the question what makes grammar complex. It is a fundamental issue if we want to understand how our brains make sense of the world.

Perspectives

People in many different fields want to understand complexity better. In this book review, I refer to an article on physical education where the authors discuss the question how to teach students complex movements.
