What is it about?

Sustainable development consists of three dimensions: the social, the economic, and the ecological dimension. This study shows that the curriculum and the syllabuses of upper secondary school in Sweden emphasis the ecological dimension. Moreover, sustainable development is implemented in such a way that natural science logic is required to understand sustainable development, while at the same time the technology student is the one who becomes competent in sustainable development

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the several dimensions of sustainable development not are implemented in the curriculum and the syllabuses of upper secondary school. This means that Agenda 2030's guidelines are not followed, despite Sweden's commitment to do so. This in turn means that it is important for teachers to take a critical attitude towards the formulas of the curriculum and the syllabuses when put into practice.

Perspectives

I learned a lot while writing this article. Sustainable development is an important issue on all levels in the Swedish education system. There are a lot of teachers that are engaged in the topic and among their tools are the curriculum and the syllabuses. I hope that the article will contribute to the engagement by giving some arguments for further developments.
