What is it about?

The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) is used as a screening tool for early detection of bowel cancer. In order to assess and maintain the performance of each laboratory, samples are sent from independent external sources of unknown concentration to be analysed as a patient sample. All the results from participating laboratories are returned to the external source, collated and reports generated. This allows for peer comparison of laboratories. The material sent to laboratories to assess FIT can come in a variety of different matrices. We believe this is the first evaluation of the different matrices and how the choice of matrix can affect the results reported.
