What is it about?

Calligone 'born beautiful' is a lost Greek novel set on the Black Sea. The protagonist is shipwrecked in the country of the Amazons, gains the trust of these warrior women, whom she helps to organise their army against the Scythians. The play also includes romantic elements. One of the episodes takes place in the military camp: the protagonist enters her tent, sword in hand, cursing her lover Erasinus and the goddess Artemis. The character could be inspired by Hypsicrates, the last wife of Mithridates VI, as well as by the Ukrainian women of antiquity, in whose tombs arrows, bows and other objects related to horse training (4th-3rd century BC) have been found.
