What is it about?

Asthma and obesity are major health problems that affect millions. Obesity has been linked to worse asthma severity. In this review, we looked at clinical trials of weight loss in patients with obesity and asthma. We found four studies in children and six in adults. All trials reported significant weight loss. In general, they also reported improvements in quality of life and in asthma symptoms. Studies in adults also showed some improvements in lung function, but results in children were less clear. Larger trials with standardized outcomes are needed before broad clinical recommendations can be given.
