What is it about?

This paper aims at modelling growth patterns of Macao’s tourism industry (using a proxy index – gross domestic product, i.e., GDP), the number of inbound tourists, and the consumption of resources using four-parameter logistic models. The relationships between the growth of Macao's tourism industry and increases in energy and water resources are determined.

Why is it important?

Tourism is one of the key industries in many developed and developing countries. Understanding how it impacts our environment is crucial.

Perspectives

The Macao SAR Government should find ways to educate the public including employees in the tourism industry about sustainable development, climate change, environmental protection and conservation of natural resources. Besides, it should focus on 'real' sustainable development (not sustained development).
