What is it about?

Sensitivity analysis is a good practice to use in conjunction with mathematical modelling. When the model needs to serve as an input to policy decision or appraisal a more rigorous standard of proof is needed. This is provided by sensitivity auditing. This approach demands extended participation and explicit value judgments about the model, the motivation of its developers and of their explicit or implicit assumptions.

Why is it important?

Increasing social, political or technological choices are driven by models. The transparency, legitimacy and plausibility of these models becomes thus a major concern for all those affected by those choices.

Perspectives

Sensitivity auditing, by questioning the power relations and the normative stances surrounding a problem, promotes an opening of the space of the possible data- or evidence-driven stories which can be told about a given contested issue. This is now called 'quantitative story telling', see "Resources". All this feeds into a maturing need to promote responsibility in the use of quantitative information, see our 'Pledge' in Resources.
