What is it about?

BMP7 exerts its action in a dose-dependent fashion. BMP7 stimulates proliferation at low to intermediate concentration in the periphery of the fetal kidney, whereas induces cadherin-11 expression at intermediate concentration near the tip of ureteric bud thereby stimulating cap mesenchyme formation.

Why is it important?

We found the dose-dependent effect of BMP7 and its signaling in metanephric mesenchymal cells. Furthermore, the role of cadherin-aa, an adhesion molecule, in stimulating cap mesenchyme formation was demonstrated.

Perspectives

This study will hopefully stimulate the future investigation on the role of cadherin-11 in kidney development, especially in nephron progenitor cells as well as signaling pathways of BMP7 other than MAP kinase.
