What is it about?
This study examines the well-being of households receiving Indonesia’s Family Hope Program (PKH) in an urban area of Bandung after the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores not only income and basic needs, but also health, education, living standards, social support, economic opportunities, access to services, and beneficiaries’ own perceptions of their quality of life. The study finds that while many families remain optimistic about their future, they continue to face challenges in achieving sustainable welfare.

Why is it important?
Poverty is more than a lack of income. This research shows that families can still experience difficulties in health, living standards, economic security, and social participation even when receiving government assistance. By using a multidimensional approach to measure well-being, the study provides evidence that can help policymakers improve poverty reduction programs, better target support, and promote sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable urban households
Perspectives
Working on this study reinforced my view that poverty cannot be understood through income alone. Although many PKH beneficiary families in urban Bandung remained optimistic about their lives after the COVID-19 pandemic, the findings revealed ongoing challenges related to health, living standards, economic opportunities, and social support. What I find particularly important is that households can appear stable on some indicators while still experiencing significant vulnerabilities in others. I hope this research encourages policymakers and practitioners to adopt a more holistic approach to measuring welfare and designing social assistance programs, so that support not only addresses immediate needs but also helps families build sustainable and resilient livelihoods.
