What is it about?
William A. Williams had a fabulous career as a historian, publishing extremely important works including THE TRAGEDY OF AMERICAN DIPLOMACY, THE CONTOURS OF AMERICAN HISTORY, and THE ROOTS OF THE MODERN AMERICAN EMPIRE --- His work was extremely important in giving detailed intellectual content to arguments against the United States' actions in VIetnam during the 1960s as well as support for various efforts to fully democratize American society then and since.

Why is it important?
This review re-introduces Williams to a later set of generations --- and identifies the value of this comprehensive intellectual and political biography.
Perspectives
I personally benefited from interactions both with Williams' work as well as with Williams the man. Reading and reviewing this book was important to me --- one of my earliest publications was a review of THE ROOTS OF THE MODERN AMERICAN EMPIRE in 1970
