What is it about?
Brazil's oceanic islands are remote, biodiverse, and scientifically important, yet they are severely underrepresented in geographic information systems and spatial databases. This study identifies the main geoinformation gaps for Brazilian maritime islands and discusses their scientific and strategic importance. We argue that better geospatial data is urgently needed to support conservation, territorial monitoring, and research in these unique environments.

Why is it important?
Brazil holds sovereignty over several oceanic islands with exceptional biodiversity and geopolitical relevance, yet these areas are poorly mapped and inadequately documented in public databases. This study makes a direct case for investment in geoinformation infrastructure for Brazil's maritime territories, which is essential for evidence-based governance, environmental monitoring, and sustainable development of these unique and fragile ecosystems.
Perspectives
Working on geoinformation for Brazil's oceanic islands revealed how much of our territory remains truly unexplored from a scientific data perspective. We hope this article motivates greater institutional investment in remote sensing, field surveys, and open data platforms for these strategic and ecologically significant areas.
