What is it about?

Modelling of lateral dispersion of compressive stress trajectories in concrete subjected to compression and experimental validation

Why is it important?

Till this point no one has suggested a mathematical equation to estimate the lateral tension generated by axial compression. Guyon had suggested certain values and given certain ideas about the characteristics of the isostatic lines of compression. Using those characteristics, boundary conditions were formulated based on which a fifth order polynomial expression was derived. This was used to estimate the transverse tension. Estimation of transverse tension is necessary to decide the amount of reinforcement required to resist the lateral tension. The expression is useful to design the end-blocks in post-tensioned girders,
