What is it about?

The former Mamluk viceroy and therefore vehement opponent of Selīm I. (r. 1512-1520) Jānbirdī al-Ghazālī later became the sultan’s loyal governor of Damascus. When Selīm I. died in 1520, Jānbirdī al-Ghazālī refused to obey Selīm’s successor. Al- Ghazālī serves as an example of the challenge to sovereignty in the period of transition from Mamluk to Ottoman rule in Bilād al-Shām.
