What is it about?
Efficient procurement is essential for delivering construction projects on time, within budget, and with the required quality. However, many construction companies lack a structured way to evaluate how mature their procurement processes are. This study introduces a practical assessment method that enables organizations to measure the maturity of their procurement practices, identify improvement opportunities, and prioritize actions for continuous improvement. The method supports managers in making better decisions, strengthening supplier relationships, reducing operational risks, and improving overall project performance. It also provides a common framework that organizations can use to compare their procurement capabilities over time and guide future improvements.

Why is it important?
Construction companies are under growing pressure to improve procurement performance while managing increasingly complex projects, supply chain disruptions, and sustainability requirements. However, existing maturity models are largely generic and provide limited guidance for the specific challenges of construction procurement. This study presents a procurement maturity assessment method tailored to the construction industry, combining a structured evaluation framework with practical guidance for identifying capability gaps and improvement priorities. Unlike generic maturity models, the proposed method reflects the operational realities of construction projects and provides managers with actionable insights for continuous improvement. The research contributes both to procurement management theory and to professional practice by offering an industry-specific tool that supports benchmarking, strategic decision-making, and long-term organizational capability development.
Perspectives
My interest in this research comes from working closely with construction companies that recognize the strategic importance of procurement but often lack a structured way to evaluate and improve their capabilities. I have seen organizations invest heavily in new systems and technologies without first understanding the maturity of their procurement processes. This study reflects my belief that meaningful improvement starts with a reliable diagnosis. I hope the proposed method helps both researchers and practitioners establish a common language for assessing procurement capabilities and encourages organizations to view procurement not only as an operational function, but as a strategic driver of project and business performance.
