What is it about?

This article is a review of the Spanish literature looking for women doing sports in different disciplines. What we have realized is that the different texts capture a reliable image of the Spanish sports history. We have samples of different genres – being poetry the most frequent one – where the female is not considered in the same way as the masculine. There are also several sports activities commonly practiced by women as for example swimming or tennis, both considered as typically feminine, rather than football – regarded as something masculine –. So, we are going to describe the evolution of the Spanish sports literature, being women the main character. There is also an analysis of the women’s roll in these texts in order to see if there is a different perception.

Why is it important?

Podríamos destacar la exhaustiva revisión bibliográfica realizada por la solicitante a lo largo de la historia de la literatura española para poder recuperar los textos en los que la mujer deportista estuviera presente. The importance of this study is mainly the period of time in which is developed, as well as the results obtained. Contrary to what it may seem, woman is present on Spanish literature, but she just practices certain sports and in texts is patent the woman is seen as a carnal symbol.

Perspectives

This paper is the result of the research project SDF “Solo Deporte Femenino”, funded by the Consejo Superior de Deportes, the Universidad Europea de Madrid and Cátedra del Real Madrid since 2009 till 2012. Although nowadays there are plenty of projects about gender, on the 2009 there were not so frequent. That's probably the reason why the Consejo Superior de Deportes funded it for three years in a row. In this way, the project objectives involve the sportswomen analysis in different scopes: cinema, press, radio, literature, etc.
