What is it about?

In the early 1990s, early funeral doom metal music provided unique contemplative experiences to listeners. After providing some theory about how this these contemplative experiences work, this article specifically traces contemplative dimensions within the music of funeral doom metal bands such as Cathedral, Skepticism, and Thergothon.

Why is it important?

Funeral doom metal can be often associated with negativity and despair. This article overturns those negative assumptions and celebrates the positive contemplative elements of funeral doom metal. As an niche sub-genre of metal music, funeral doom metal also does not receive much scholarly attention. This article provides a much needed analysis into this influential type of music.

Perspectives

As someone who listens to funeral doom metal and attends funeral doom live performances myself, this article on the contemplative power of funeral doom metal is something that I have been thinking about for many years. I am grateful to have published it at Metal Music Studies.
