What is it about?

A survey of current (2018) shifts in the teaching and practice of illustration plus issues and concerns, this brief editorial is the introduction to an issue of the Journal of Illustration. The topic was also addessed in a round table at the 2017 joint conference in Illustration Research and Illustr4tio, held in Nancy, France.

Why is it important?

The field of illustration has been shifting away from industry focus to something resembling fine art. Are we losing our identity or improving it?

Perspectives

The turn to theoretical content in illustration brings the field into alignment with discourses in graphic design, art, media, and literary studies. It also embraces artistic research, expanding the purview of what illustrators can do. This marks a significant shift in status of illustration to be recognized in academic contexts. It is not embraced by older and more industry-oriented players, however, who raise some valid points (among spurious ones) about what may be lost in this movement.
