What is it about?

The article offers an overview of existing work in the field of Greek Screen Industries (mainly film and television, but also games), highlighting the traditional dominance of 'political economy' approaches and hailing the more pluralistic advent of 'Media Industry Studies'. It offers definitions of both conceptual fields and map on existing work in relation to it, while also pointing to fruitful future directions for research.

Why is it important?

The study of Screen and Media Industries in Greece is relatively new, and, until very recently it has been dominated by top-bottom political economy approaches that ultimately limit the potential scope of exploration. In presenting and arguing in support of the more pluralistic, but still critically-orientated, 'Media Industry Studies' the article opens a new path for future research in connection to Screen Industries in Greece.

Perspectives

This is a co-authored work that functions both as a standalone article and as an extended introduction to the special issue of the Journal of Greek Media and Culture on the topic of "Greek Screen Industries".
